The family of Mary Sedlak of Johnson City is saddened to announce her peaceful passing on May 8th, 2024 at the age of 98 years.
Mary was born in Johnson City, New York in 1925 and went to Johnson City schools through the 10th grade, but then went to work because America was at war and their family income needed help. Her varied working life began by making perfumes, then as a dental assistant, clerical jobs at Remington Rand, Ozalid, and the New York State Unemployment Office, and ending with 20 years as the Office Manager for the Bricklayers Union. Whatever the job, Mary always gave it 100%.
She was a member of John Hus Presbyterian church for 76 years; a Sunday school teacher for 10 years, and a Church Deacon for 10 years.
She met John Sedlak, her future husband of 72 years, in 1940. They married at John Hus Church in 1945 while John was on leave from his service with the Eighth U.S. Army-Air Force 466th Bomb Group in England.
She enjoyed many years as a member of the Czechoslovak Moravian Club. She loved her family and took great pride in their many accomplishments. She loved preparing ethnic dinners for them over the years. She also enjoyed playing Bingo and vacationing in New York State, Cape Cod, Florida, and Pennsylvania’s Amish country.
Mary is predeceased by her husband John, her brother John, and her sister Irene Willard. She is survived by her children Patricia (Nick) Timko, Richard (Kathy) Sedlak, and many nieces and nephews.
Thanks to the staff at St. Louise Manor and Elizabeth Church Manor for their care during this past decade, and to her physician Dr. Ahmad. Thanks also to Marge Tubbert for her expert guidance in helping us take the right path a decade ago.
A visitation will be held on Monday, May 13 from 10 until 11 AM at the Chopyak-Scheider Funeral Home,326 Prospect Street, Binghamton, followed by a service with Rev. Robert Peak officiating. Entombment will follow in Riverhurst Cemetery. Eternal memory. Vičnuju pamjať.
