Richard M. Caterino, 79, died while at a Nursing Home/Rehab, early Wednesday morning, July 14, 2021. Richard was born on May 8, 1942 in Montclair, New Jersey to the late John and Louise (Calabrese) Caterino. He grew up in Bronx, New York, Montclair, New Jersey, and most of his youth in Edison, New Jersey. He was a member of the first graduating class of 1960 from the newly built Edison Township High School. Richard attended Seton Hall University where he obtained his Bachelor's and Master's Degrees. He married his wife of 27 years, Joan L. (Bussom) Caterino in Binghamton, New York and established a life in up-state New York. Richard and Joan did not have any children, but there is a little ten-pound Yorkshire Terrier, Sophie, patiently waiting for Richard to return home.
Richard is predeceased by Donna Caterino, his daughter, and John Caterino, his brother. Richard is also predeceased by his father and mother-in-law, Robert and Marion Bussom.
He is also survived by a son Richard (Christine) Caterino of Dunedin, Florida; a brother Bart (Maria) Caterino of Cherry Hill, New Jersey; nieces and nephews: Bart, John, Tina, and Angela; step-grandchildren Sean and Christopher; grandchildren Thomas, Jackie, Amanda, and Maryanna; and great-grandchild Brady.
For many years Richard taught at Rahway High School in New Jersey, where he was President of the Rahway Education Association, and worked as a Consultant for the New Jersey Education Association. In 1983 Richard moved to Binghamton, New York to work as a UniServ Representative with the National Education Association of New York, retiring in 2003. Richard was an avid Giant football and Yankee baseball fan. He started his golfing career as a caddie at Oakridge Golf Course and Shackamaxon Country Club (in New Jersey). This led to a deep love of the game of golf, with numerous golf trips with friends and family, sometimes involving groups of eighteen or more buddies traveling to courses throughout the United States. There was always a reason to make time for golf. Trips to casinos were always an option if golfing wasn't in the cards – trips to Atlantic City, Las Vegas, or just "head west on 17 for a quick trip" were options for entertainment.
The family will receive friends Sunday 2-4pm at the Chopyak-Scheider Funeral Home, 326 Prospect St., Binghamton. A funeral service will be held on Monday 11am at the funeral home followed by the burial at Calvary Cemetery.
A contribution in memory of Richard can be made to Children's Home of Wyoming Conference Center, 1182 Chenango Street, Binghamton, NY, 607-772-6904 (https://chowc.org/donate/).
