Dorothy (Yacko) Martin, 88, of Binghamton, passed away on Tuesday, January 15, 2019, in her home where she wanted to be, just ten days shy of her 89th birthday. Dorothy was predeceased by her parents, Harry and Mary Yacko, siblings, Margaret, Ann, Katherine, Mickey (Agnes), Peter (Beverly), and Mary Mahlum(George.) Dorothy was also predeceased by her loving husband of 64 years, Thomas, and her beloved son, Keith. She was a life long member of the Dormition of the Virgin Mary Russian Orthodox Church where she spent many hours volunteering in the kitchen making pierogis. Dorothy was a graduate of Binghamton Central High School, Class of '48. Following graduation she spent her early years working for Ansco in the First Ward, before settling down to raise her family with Tom on Mygatt Street.
Mom took great pride in caring for her family and her home, although she did require the boys to wash their own dirty baseball socks. Mom will be missed for her cooking, especially during the holidays. Her pierogi, halupki, chicken soup, Christmas cookies, cheesecake, and Thanksgiving cranberry sauce were all award winners. Mom always took an interest in others, enjoying the company of all those around her. She was hospitable, thoughtful, and loved nothing more than to share conversation and laughter.
Dorothy is survived by her son, Tom and Diane, Britton, SD, and their family, Colin and Carrie (Cole and Crew), Andrew, and Brett and Michelle, and her son, David and Sheila, Binghamton, and their family, Joe, John, Molly, Michael, and Bridget. Dorothy's grandchildren and great grandchildren brought her tremendous joy. She also loved her extended family, including many devoted nieces, nephews, great nieces, and great nephews.
In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Dormition of the Virgin Mary Orthodox Church, 54 Baxter Street, Binghamton, NY, 13905. The family will receive visitors at 9:00 am on Saturday, January 19, at the church with a funeral service to follow at 10:00am with the Very Rev. Ilya Gotlinsky officiating. Burial will be at the convenience of the family in the spring. Memory Eternal.
