Gregory Matyas 66 fell asleep in the Lord peacefully at his home on
Monday, December 23, 2024, following a courageous battle with esophageal cancer.
He was predeceased by his parents Joseph and Lillian (Marko) Matyas and his
sister, Cheryl Matyas (Nugent).
He is survived by his two sons, Nicholas Matyas of Johnson City, NY and Kevin (Kemba Daniels-Matyas) Matyas of Philadelphia, PA as well as the mother of his sons, Cindy (Koast) Matyas (Marty) (Johnson City, NY), and best friends, Jeff Neuss (Manlius, NY) and Tom Monico (Johnson City, NY) as well as several other cousins, family, and friends.
Greg loved his family and the Johnson City Community in which he was an active servant. He was a founding member of the Johnson City Peewee Football league and coach. He also coached Little League Baseball and PONY League Baseball for nearly a decade and was the President and Vice President of the Johnson City Wrestling Club for several years. He went above and beyond as a coach to help his athletes, he would give kids rides to and from practice, buy equipment for kids who were in need. He was also instrumental in bringing lights to the Johnson City Little League Field. Greg served as a member of the Johnson City Planning Board as well as member and past chairperson of the Johnson City Zoning Board.
He was an electrical engineer with over 30 years of experience and worked for Square D/Schneider Electric, Binghamton, NY for over 20 years. Greg found great fulfillment and took pride in his work as he received numerous recognitions and accommodations from Schneider Electric for his efforts. He worked on several major projects including Wegmans, Cornell University, Tioga Downs Casino and others throughout New York State.
A funeral service will be offered by the Very Rev. Protopresbyter James Dutko on
Monday at 11:30am at St. Michael’s Orthodox Church, 292 Clinton Street, Binghamton, NY. Due to weather conditions, burial will be at the convenience of the family at the parish cemetery. The family will receive friends from 9:30-11:30am.
In lieu of flowers a donation may be made to St Michaels Church. The family would like to express thanks and gratitude to Dr. Yalamanchili and the staff at Broome Oncology as well as the team at Guthrie Lourdes Hospice for the attention and care given to Greg. Also, to his cousin Gayle Beurket for spending time and taking him to appointments throughout the years.
Arrangements and services are under the direction of the Chopyak-Scheider Funeral Home, Binghamton.
