Daniel “Dan” Matias, 83, of Binghamton, passed away peacefully at his home on June 7, 2026.
Dan was born in Johnson City, on March 16, 1943, and spent most of his life in the area. He was predeceased by his parents, Daniel Joseph Matias and Celia Matias.
Dan is survived by his children, John (Brenda) Matias, Dawn (Scott) Riegert, and Tom Matias; his cherished grandchildren, Mason Matias, Dylan Riegert, and Ripley Riegert; his sister, Nadine (Rick O’Neil) Kalada; and his companion, Jackie McIntyre. He also leaves behind many family members and friends who will miss him dearly.
Dan retired from NYSEG, where he worked as an Environmental Specialist. In retirement, he fully embraced the activities he loved most, including fishing, gardening, and spending time with family and friends. He spent many happy days boating and fishing at his camp on Oneida Lake.
Later in life, Dan became a devoted member of St. John the Baptist Ukrainian Orthodox Church. He served the congregation faithfully for many years. To Dan, the church was not just a place of worship but a beloved family of family and friends and a cornerstone of his life. He could often be found in the church kitchen making pyrohy (pierogi) or tending the grill during the Ukrainian Day Festival.
Dan also loved to travel and created lasting memories on fishing trips to Alaska, attending countless NASCAR races, and visiting destinations such as Atlanta and Yellowstone National Park. Above all, he cherished his three grandchildren, who affectionately referred to him as, “Pop Pop” and “Grandpa Dan” He will be deeply missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing him.
A funeral service will be offered on Tuesday, June 16, 2026 at 10am at St. John the Baptist Ukrainian Orthodox Church, 1 St. John’s Parkway, Johnson City, NY 13790 with the Rev. Father Ivan Synevskyy officiating. Burial will be in the parish cemetery. The family will receive friends at the church from 9am until the time of the funeral service.
Arrangements are through the Chopyak-Scheider Funeral Home.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Dan’s memory to either his church or to the American Cancer Society.
