Walter D. Szmyrko age 57 lost his courageous battle with bone cancer on Sunday, November 28, 2021, surrounded by the family he loved and fought so hard to spend time with.
Walter is survived by his wife Ginger (Bowman) Szmyrko of 35 years, his sons, Daniel (Megan Sellers) Szmyrko and Timothy Szmyrko; his mother, Maria Szmyrko; his sister, Irene Schotts; his nephew, Brian Schotts; his uncle, John Klym; special cousin, Doris (Stefan) Diachuk; his aunt, Anna (Stefan) Melnyk and Godmother, Dorothy Klaczany.
He was predeceased by his father, Walter Szmyrko, Sr and cousin, Sylvia Wosolyshyn.
Walter was employed by the Broome County Corrections Department for 19 years. He was a member of the Sacred Heart Ukrainian Catholic Church.
Wally was known for his love of Family, Faith, Ukrainian Heritage, Beer Brewing, Sense of Humor and Generosity.
The family will receive friends Wednesday from 4-6pm at the Chopyak-Scheider Funeral Home, 326 Prospect Street, Binghamton where Rev. Father Teodor J. Czabala Jr. will conduct a prayer service at 6pm. Father Czabala will celebrate a Divine Liturgy on Thursday at 10am at Sacred Heart Ukrainian Catholic Church, 230 Ukrainian Hill Road, Johnson City. Burial will be at the parish cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Wally's memory to either Sacred Heart Ukrainian Catholic Church or cemetery funds or to the Hospice at Lourdes, 4102 Old Vestal Road, Vestal, NY 13850.
