Walter (Wolodymyr) Szmyrko, 90, of Binghamton, went peacefully to be with his Lord at his home after a short illness on Saturday, October 30, 2021.
He was predeceased by his parents, John and Anna Szmyrko.
He is survived by his beloved wife of sixty-six years, Maria Szmyrko; daughter, Irene Schotts; son, Walter Daniel (Ginger) Szmyrko; grandsons, Daniel and Timothy Szmyrko, Brian Schotts; brother-in-law, John Klym; sister-in-law, Anna (Stefan) Melnyk; and niece, Doris (Stefan) Diachuk.
Walter was born on November 21, 1930 in Zabie, Ukraine. He immigrated to the United States in 1950. He was an Army veteran of the Korean War and a member of the Ukrainian American Legion Post. He was a retired employee of the Ansco and Ozalid Corporation, Vestal, NY.
Walter was an active member of Sacred Heart Ukrainian Catholic Church, where he was a member of its choir and Holy Name Society and a past trustee. He was very devoted to his church and enjoyed volunteering his time to the Friday dinners and the other functions of his church.
Walter was a very kind, gentle and generous man who loved being with his family, friends, and fellow parishioners. He always enjoyed talking and joking with them. Walter loved being outdoors enjoying nature, especially his birds and flowers. He had a green thumb and everyone turned to him when their plants were dying so he could bring them back to life.
The family will receive friends from Friday 9-10 am at Sacred Heart Ukrainian Catholic Church, 230 Ukrainian Hill Road, Johnson City, followed by a Divine Liturgy at 10 am celebrated by Rev. Fr. Teodor J. Czabala Jr. Burial will be in the parish cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Walter's memory to either the Sacred Heart Ukrainian Catholic Church building or cemetery funds.
